Perk up a Winter Morning: Put on a Nice Dress!

There are only a few things that can make getting up early on a winter morning less painful. One of them might be crumpets and jam. Another might be the quiet sound of your favourite radio show. But particularly uplifting after you’ve jumped out the shower on a grey November or December day is throwing on a fabulous day dress. Wearing a day dress will not only make you feel glamorous, and therefore jump-start you into motion. It’ll also minimise the time and effort you spend getting ready.

The rise of the meeting, or restaurant-friendly, dress as opposed to the floppy and flimsy beach or garden dress has recently been one of the most important areas of progress in fashion. This season, wearing a day dress to work, meetings and formal social gatherings is now more of a viable option than ever; the present rage for sharp tailoring, broad shoulders and long sleeves rather than sleeveless shifts has meant that the day dress in fashion, right now, guarantees a look of sharp, sassy professionalism.

A favourite of stylish celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz and Stella McCartney, the day dress is utterly fitted and feminine. You can choose to wear a belted day-dress, for an even more figure-hugging, streamlined glam. And you can choose to wear it just above or below the knee depending on what looks right for your shape. Mid-calf length dresses are especially sophisticated, and would probably be most suitable for wearing to work. Throwing in a few accessories like bangles and dangly earrings is a great idea if you’re wearing the dress to an after-work party.

A quick word of warning: if you do decide to wear day dresses during the winter, you will, of course, need the back up of some warm winter tights and a pair of ankle or knee-high boots. Do make sure that you have a fresh batch of woolly black tights at the ready. There’s nothing more disheartening than hurriedly rifling through holey tights on a dark morning. And be sure to team the dress with layers; thick jackets and blazers, big scarves and hats are what make wearing dresses in the winter possible.

At the moment, the day smart and professional looking day dress is a mainstay of most high street stores. If you’re looking to find a great day dress on the cheap, you’d be wise to check out New Look’s current selection of dresses, largely inspired from catwalk creations. The knitted polo dress with belt for just £25.00 is a great pick for work-wear. Please note that prices are correct at the time of writing (11/25/09).
